What actually derails an oversized move

Almost never the road itself. It is three things that should have been checked before anything was loaded.

Height

Loaded height, not the piece alone

The Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine bridge-tunnel clears 4.4 m. Anything taller goes over a bridge instead. What matters is the total height once the piece is on the trailer — that is where the unpleasant surprises come from.

The spring thaw period

In spring, permitted loads are cut by 8 % to 20 % depending on the zone, with different dates for each of Quebec’s three zones. For a heavy piece, that decides whether the move goes now or after the restrictions lift.

What are the regulations for oversized loads in Quebec?

Dimension and weight limits are set by Quebec’s ministry of transport; past them, a special circulation permit is mandatory. Send us the dimensions and the weight and we will tell you in minutes which side of the line you are on. It is a matter of regulatory thresholds, not judgement: past the permitted limits a special permit becomes mandatory, and an escort may be too.

How long does a special permit take?

It depends on the dimensions and the route. That is exactly why it pays to call early: a standard piece can leave on short notice, an oversized load needs the administrative lead time. Days are won at the start of the file, not at the end.

Do you run emergencies when a line is down?

A good share of what we do. When a production stoppage costs more than the freight, the math changes: tell us on the first call and we build the file around that.

Can you position the piece, not just deliver it?

Yes, and it is included. Our material handling service covers bringing it down, moving it and setting it in the exact spot, even where access is tight or upstairs.

Can you store the piece before installation?

Yes, and it is common on industrial installations. Our warehousing service receives the equipment on the supplier’s date and delivers it when the site is ready for it.
